The Massachusetts city of Marshfields can date its historic Fair back to 1862 when the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society launched their first Fair, organized by Levi Walker and George Martin Baker, to promote local agriculture and educate its residents. In 1905 Thomas Lawson, a man who made his fortune from the lumber industry, became president of the Society and was very keen to promote horse racing. He oversaw the building of a number of barns and a grandstand for the Fair, utilising the facilities when a 5 furlong racetrack for Sulkies was developed on the Fairgrounds. This was later reorganised as a 4 furlong oval, with 6 furlong chute and 198 metre home straight. In 1935 the gambling laws in Massachusetts were relaxed and pari-mutuel betting was allowed at the racecourse during thoroughbred meetings, starting on 23rd August 1936. Racing continued for almost exactly 55 years before the final meeting was staged on 24th August 1991. |
